New York punk rocker-turned-writer Dito Montiel directs this gritty, cinema verité adaptation of his acclaimed autobiography. Oddly enough, though it shares the title of his book and appears to be about a kid named Dito Montiel, the film is a mostly fictionalized story that veers far afield of the original book. Oh, well. Montiel shows great promise as a filmmaker, and he's recruited quite a cast, including Robet Downey Jr., Shia LaBeouf, Chazz Palminteri and Dianne Wiest. Admirable as it might be, the filmends up feeling like a retread of several other New York-based coming-of-age films (Mean Streets, Do the Right Thing, Saturday Night Fever, A Boy's Life, Sleepers).98 minutes R.
