Sci-fi imagineer J.G. Ballard's dystopian, adult take on Lord of the Flies gets an impressive adaptation courtesy of British director Ben Wheatley (A Field in England). Eligible bachelor Dr. Laing (Tom Hiddleston) moves into a grimly modernist housing block on the outskirts of London. Before long, a brewing class struggle and diminishing resources turn this futuristic housing complex into an experiment in tribal warfare. Downstairs, the working-class residents plot revolution, rape and murder. Upstairs, the wealthy penthouse dwellers descend into Roman-style orgies of excess. The metaphors about class warfare are obvious, but Wheatly imparts a gorgeous 1970s gloss and a morbid sense of humor to this apocalyptic tale.FULL REVIEW:Apartment living falls apart in energetic adaptation of cult classic by Devin D.
