Jewish Community Center ABQ

This weekend, the Jewish Community Center of Albuquerque is hosting their second annual ABQ NoshFest, an event to celebrate Jewish cuisine past and present. After a huge turnout last year of almost 2,000 people, they’ve relocated to a larger venue—Sandia Resort—and have added vendors and activities to the schedule. If you’re a fan of challah, bagels and lox, latkes and matzoh ball soup, you’ll want to come by and bring the family with you.

Some of the new activities this year include a challah bake-off, a cake walk, plenty of games for the kids and a cooking demo and talk from Amy Kritzer, food blogger and author of the cookbook Sweet Noshings: New Twists on Traditional Jewish Desserts. Vendors—including Savoy Bar & Grill and Zinc Bistro—will be selling classic Jewish foods like rugelach and latkes, as well as some new takes on the classics, like Tamashi’s cream cheese and lox sushi roll. There will also be a raffle with a first place prize of a three-night trip to New York City donated by Rio Grande Travel and a second place prize of a 55’ digital TV from Baillio’s. Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $25.

Since Jewish people make up less than one percent of the Albuquerque population, NoshFest is a unique opportunity for the JCC to share Jewish culture with the city. “And what better way to learn about a culture than through its food?” says Phylis Wolf, Director of Arts, Culture and Education at the JCC. Since last year’s event was so popular, Wolf suggests getting your tickets in advance—and also promises that they’re ready for the crowds this year. Tickets are $6.50 in advance and can be purchased at abqnoshfest.org, or at the door for $8. Entry to the challah bake-off costs $18 and includes regular entry to NoshFest.

NoshFest starts at noon and goes until 4pm at Sandia Resort (30 Rainbow Rd.) this Sunday, Jan. 13.
