Save Blue Mesa Review

With your knowledge of useless facts

The Blue Mesa Review, UNM’s literary journal that I happen to be an editor for, has fallen on hard times. Last year, for the first time since Rudolfo Anaya founded it in 1983, the magazine had its university supplied budget entirely eliminated and is now forced to fend for itself in order to survive.

This year’s Blue Mesa Review will be published exclusively online, but even that costs money. In order to gain the funds to do so, and to continue publishing new fiction, non-fiction and poetry in the future, the organization will be holding a fundraiser tonight at Blackbird Buvette. It’s a Geeks Who Drink trivia contest, with prizes and everything, and it looks like it’ll be a lot of fun.

Come on down, have a few beers, reveal to the world just how much you know about the Star Wars universe, and help keep this valuable literary institution alive.

Starts at 7 p.m. Cover is $5. All proceeds go to supporting Blue Mesa Review.

Flyer on the Wall: Beyer Redux

Outsider comic artist Mark Beyer originally created this art for a show at The Kosmos in August 2011. He was published in every issue of RAW Magazine during the publication’s 11-year run and contributed album and merch artwork for both John Zorn and Naked City. Gregg Araki loosely based his cult classic The Doom Generation on Beyer’s “Amy and Jordan” comic series. DJ Caterwaul recycles this art to hype a Friday night Low Life Happy Hour at Blackbird Buvette in this week’s Flyer on the Wall.

TEN, Local Spin and American Deacon

There’s always so much amazing live music happening in Burque and Santa Fe. It’s impossible to cover it all, but I will do my utmost to keep y’all apprised of the best shows happening each week. In this week’s Music to Your Ears, I honed in on three shows that sound particularly boss. Eric McFadden’s new trio, TEN, debuts at Sister on Friday. On Saturday, the Local Spin listening party at Blackbird Buvette features lots of Gatas y Vatas fest tracks and performances by Lauren Anderson, Pancakes! and The Vomettes (The 5 Star Motelles). If you feel like a road trip to the City Different, consider going on Tuesday, because Dan Deacon performs at Molly’s Kitchen and Lounge.
