The Department of Neurology at University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Science Center (HSC) is seeking a motivated Associate Scientist to conduct research with Dr. Guangbin Xia. The successful applicant will be assisting in research of disease-specific induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) and therapeutic genome editing for Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Dr. Xia is using human iPS cells as cellular models to investigate the pathogenic mechanism of nucleotide expansion-related neurodegenerative disorders and to explore therapeutic strategies through genome editing. Dr. Xia’s lab is currently working on skeletal muscle progenitor cell differentiation from DM1 and genome-edited DM1 iPS cell, which will be tested in a mouse model for cell replacement therapy.Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. · Ph.D. preferred. • Candidate who is interested in above research fields and has related skills and experiences in molecular biology, cell culture and animal (nude mice and transgenic mice) caring are welcome to apply. • Experience working on iPSC and differentiation. • Ability to independently design and implement standard research protocol, • Analyze, evaluate data and develop graphics and /or written interpretations and conclusions. • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
