The Descendants

George Clooney heads to Hawaii, finds humor and heartbreak in delicate family dramedy

It’s been seven years since writer-director Alexander Payne ran roughshod over awards season with his Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award winning film Sideways. Now, he’s returned with another praiseworthy effort, the winningly emotional dramedy The Descendants.

The Ides of March

Cynical political drama digs the dirt on our electoral system

We live, arguably, in the most contentious of political times. ... Granted, things were probably pretty argumentative up on Capitol Hill during the Civil War—but America didn’t have 24-hour cable news channels, the blogosphere and talk radio back in the 1860s, so the volume was considerably lower. Today, it’s turned up to 11, with Republicans and Democrats seemingly unable to agree on whether puppies and kitties are cute. (And subsequently, having every pundit in the nation turning “puppygate” into the next major scandal.) By all indications, the American public is getting pretty tired of it. As a result, right now doesn’t seem like the most advantageous time to release a film as heavily political as The Ides of March. Read Alibi’s review right here.

Up in the Air

Mature look at the world of corporate downsizing mixes romance, humor and a timely personal touch

When Up in the Air marches confidently into February’s Oscar race (and it will), it will be on the strength of its sharp writing and expertly grounded performances. If Up in the Air succeeds at the box office (and it might), it will be due largely to the film’s timely theme.

Not a dolphin, but still only 74% human.

Spooky Scary Tuesday the 13th!

Get ready for creaky, windy hauntedness! It’s Tuesday, October 13! October has Halloween, so that is scary. The number 13 is scary (because it was my soccer number and I was frighteningly bad). And Tuesday is scary because there’s still soooo much left of the work week. I’ve got chills thinking about it.

What else happened on this haunted day in history?

In 1845, Texas ratified its state constitution. Definitely evil.

In 1974, Ed Sullivan died. Probably of a haunting-related cause. Was he sucked into a TV? Ironic and true.

Margaret Thatcher was born ... wearing a tweed suit and carrying a battleax.

In 1716, Hungarian Emperor Karel VI's troops occupy Temesvar. You know the rest.

In 1987, the US Navy first used trained dolphins. Since then, they’ve become highly intelligent and deadly spies. George Clooney? Dolphin.
