Prepare to rally to action tomorrow when 10 local hopefuls compete in the 2014 ABQ Grand Slam Poetry Slam Championship. The four best will go on to represent Burque at the National Poetry Slam, held this August in Oakland, Calif. The poetic art of the public slam arrived in Albuquerque exactly two decades ago this year, and our homegrown versifiers have been doing us proud ever since with a national win in 2005 and frequent notable finishes. Outpost Performance Space hosts Yerba Buena member and all-around excellent percussionist Pedrito Martinez for an evening of Afro-Cuban music. Martinez performs with a multinational ensemble called the Pedrito Martinez Group. The group includes Peruvian drummer Jhair Salas, Venezuelan bassist Alvaro Benavides and Cuban keyboardist Ariacne Trujillo. Pedrito’s current Nueva York residency has resulted in heaps of hybridization and garnered rave reviews from such divergent artists as Steve Gadd and Taj Mahal. Although the current combo still bases much of their work on rumba and bata rhythms—entwined with vocalizations derived from the practice of Yoruba Santeria—they've also been influenced by funk; Old Gregg would heartily recommend this shouldn't-miss concert. Plus, you can dance to this stuff, which beats drinking Bailey’s and doing watercolors any day of the week. So, tonight at 7:30pm, strut over to Outpost (210 Yale SE). Both folk luminaries in their own right, members of poetic rock band Cold Satellite, spouses and collaborators Jeffrey Foucault and Kris Delmhorst appear in concert and conversation at Outpost Performance Space (210 Yale SE) tonight. The show begins with local, nationally syndicated radio show "Art of the Song" hosts John Dillon and Vivian Nesbitt interviewing the twosome; look for an episode composed of interview and concert highlights at artofthesong.org after the concert. Born and raised in Cuba, saxophonist, percussionist and composer Yosvany Terry immigrated to New York City in '99. Terry also incorporates the chekeré—an instrument composed of a large, hollow gourd encircled by a lacy patchwork of colored beads—which is shaken, slapped and twisted. Terry's arrival in the Big Apple coincided with a new era of experimentation and innovation in Latin jazz. An active educator and member of the jazz avant-garde, he's on tour with his quintet promoting their latest, Today's Opinion, which masterfully amalgamates West African, Cuban and American jazz rhythms and idioms. The Yosvany Terry Quintet performs in our fair city tonight at Outpost Performance Space (210 Yale SE).
