Irish Folk: Gerry Carthy Performs the Music of Ireland

The Santa Fe University of Art & Design (SFUAD) Contemporary Music Department will present contributing faculty member Gerry Carthy in concert on St. Patrick’s Day on the SFUAD campus. Carthy will perform traditional Celtic music assisted by SFUAD’s Celtic Ensemble, which he directs as an instructor at the school. Carthy, born in County Mayo on the West Coast of Ireland, plays a variety of instruments including banjo, guitar, tenor guitar, tin whistle, saxophone, fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki and contributes vocals. Inspired by the folk revival of Irish music in the 1960s and 1970s, he spent 10 years playing music in sessions around Galway. Carthy is also one of the founding members of the traditional Irish session at the Crane Bar, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary—the longest running session in Galway. Tickets to the event are free for SFUAD staff and students and $10 for the general public. SFUAD is located on St. Michael's Drive in Santa Fe on what was formerly the campus of the College of Santa Fe.
