Out With the Old
Networks sweep aside underperforming shows
The last of the 2012-13 season finales are wrapping up, and the networks are in severe “cut our losses” mode. Last weekend, the broadcast networks started announcing their new shows for fall 2013. That means programmers have to make room in their schedules for all the new content. That’s bad news for a lot of folks in Hollywood who got a mess of pink slips last week telling them that their prime time meal tickets had been canceled.

Dead and Gone
2012’s TV dead pool strikes early and often
Every fall, casual viewers and industry insiders alike engage in a little game. They try to guess which of the new TV shows is so bad or so badly placed (or both) that it will be the first to get canceled. If, for fall 2012, you put your money on CBS’ “Jersey Shore”-meets-“Ally McBeal” show “Made in Jersey,” then consider yourself an ace prognosticator. Less than four weeks into the new season, CBS executives gave the low-rated Friday night show the ax.

Pilot Down
The would-be shows you’ll never see
Late in May, the broadcast networks announced their fall lineups. Some shows look good, others look meh. But it’s always interesting to note the series that could have been—the ones that never even got past the pilot stage. Here’s a look at the 2012-2013 TV pilots that never got off the ground.

The Canceled Shows of 2012
The broadcast networks have already started showing off their shiny new fall schedules. That means, of course, the conspicuous absence of several shows you may or may not have liked. Yup, the ax has fallen, and a whole host of network shows have been canceled. Some escaped by the skin of their teeth. (ABC’s low-rated but highly regarded “Cougar Town” is moving to TBS in 2013.) Others emerged battered and beaten. (Fan-fave “Community” will return next season. For a truncated 13 episode run. On Friday nights. Paired with “Whitney.” Also, creator Dan Harmon was told to take a hike.) So which shows are gone, gone, gone?

Halftime Report
The dead and dying shows of 2011
The 2011-2012 season has hit its midway point. Shows are taking a break for the holidays and will be back with new episodes in late January or early February. Some of them anyway. A few have already gone off to that great television channel in the sky. While the fall 2011 season wasn’t exceptionally bloody, there were a handful of high-profile network casualties.

The Axman Cometh
Cancellations arrive early this season
TV’s deadpool seems particularly shallow this season. The fall 2010 TV season has barely started and already we’ve got two major casualties. FOX’s polygamist Texas con man drama “Lone Star” and ABC’s high-school-plus-10-years faux-documentary drama “My Generation” were both canceled last week after only two airings apiece.
