The Daily Word in Antibiotic Resistance, Space Pie and Snowflakes

The Daily Word

Science on gift-giving: Worry less about how cool the reveal will be, and more about whether or not the receiver will still be using your gift in the future.

Some pie enthusiasts launched a meat and potatoes pie into space to see if the structural changes brought about by extreme physical duress would make it easier to eat. It is thought the pie will freeze on its ascent and be cooked on re-entry.

A one million dollar NASA-funded satellite system was unveiled this week that can track the movement of glaciers and ice sheets around the world. Try denying that one.

“We are about to reach the point where more antibiotics will be consumed by farm animals worldwide than by humans,” says Mark Woolhouse, of the University of Edinburgh. Meaning: More antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Yay!

Check out the first footage ever captured of the prehistoric ghost shark!

Remember making paper snowflakes? I did, but only vaguely. Then I looked it up. See what I found!

The Daily Word in Domestic Terrorism, Jessica Jones, and Trials

The Daily Word

Transphobia is alive and well all over the world—in this case—to sell signs.

Soon everyone can die for the US (if you're into that kinda thing).

Think terrorist attacks on Planned Parenthood is a new thing? HA.

Will justice actually be served with the diverse Freddie Gray Jury? It seems more likely now.

What happened at San Bernardino?

The show Jessica Jones is everything I’ve ever wanted from a drama.

I doubt any of you will be able to go to this exhibition in London, but you can still enjoy these historical photos of the club scene in the UK.

The trial for beating two homeless men to death in Albuquerque began yesterday.

In addition to my upcoming list in the Alibi’s last minute gift guide, take note of this, friends.

Gifts for Fools

Every year at this exact time, nerdy online retailer Think Geek offers the absolute coolest stuff for sale. Too bad none of it’s real. But which items are real and which are fake? The Dharma Initiative alarm clock? The WiiHelm? The iPad arcade cabinet? Canned unicorn meat? Some of this stuff is so damn cool they’ve actually produced it for real (the Star Wars Tauntaun sleeping bag, for example). Argh! Must have Tribbles ’N’ Bits. They stay fuzzy in milk!

Re-Gifting Gone Bad

This lady opens a wine storage unit to find narsty rotting cheese and sausage meant for the original recipient years ago.

One in five Americans re-gift.

Here’s how to do it right. Here are even more rules.

The green re-gift.

Really? Seinfeld invented the word “re-gift.”

Actually, why do we “gift” at all?

Speaking of Last-Minute Gifts...

Have you been to Corrales Bosque Gallery? It's a co-operative. And not like La Montanita. (Hey, hey. Take it easy. I'm a member. Nob Hill branch.) But a true co-op. Each of the 20 belonging artists pays an annual membership fee and commits about seven hours of gallery supervision per month. By virtue of this structure, there is no one on payroll; the artists run the shop, manage the space, keep the books, handle the publicity, conceive and create the product. Just as they have for the last decade and a half. And all while they fundraise for the community, whether to sponsor the teen artist series at Corrales Public Library or to support the mission of Road Runner food bank.

Around this time of year, gallery members--some of whom are quite well known beyond the bounds of our fair state--design and produce ornaments. Beautiful ornaments. At beautiful prices (starting around $15). In addition, the current "Holiday Peace" show features a wide array of other work, from stocking-stuffer-sized paintings to re-decorate-the-living-room-around-me sculptures. Somewhere in between is the work of Emily Timberlake, a water media artist who moved to Albuquerque from New York 18 months ago so she could "see the sky," applied to Corrales Bosque for the community she's always sought, and evolves as an artist on a daily basis because of the "incredible talents" of her co-op colleagues. If that narrative doesn't motivate you to go to the gallery, the promise of seeing Timberlake's mixed media on paper should. Especially because you'll have the privilege of seeing 19 other artists' projects at the same time.

There are plenty of hours before the last menorah light is lit, even more before the wrapped bundles o' joy need to go under the tree. So forget Amazon and go New Mexico. Really. GO!

Corrales Bosque Gallery is located in Mercado de Maya at 4685 Corrales Rd.

Food Lover's Gift Guide

Just Desserts

Sweet gifts from a trio of local food artisans

Un Petit Morceau

Last February, Nana Visitor and Kim Montalvo began e-mailing flyers for made-to-order goodies. At first, the monthly messages went out to just a few friends and neighbors in Corrales. Now the flyers reach about 150 inboxes, and their “specialized, high-end” foods are sold in gourmet stores outside of the Village.

"We do small, beautiful little things that taste great," Montalvo says. "We love doing bite-size morsels.” That's where their business, Un Petit Morceau, gets its name.
