Family Pride

Making a place for LGBT parents—and their kids—is a priority for nonprofits

Adrien Lawyer and Elena Letourneau are what they refer to as “invisible”—a white, seemingly straight couple with a 6-year-old son.

Lawyer had his breasts removed in 2004. A year later, he began hormone replacement therapy, which deepened his voice and sprouted hair on his face. Lawyer is now legally a man. Once recognized as a lesbian couple, he and his partner have undergone not only a physical but a cultural transformation. They appear to be the all-American family. And that’s exactly what they are.

What's Happening

It’s National Coming Out Day! A message from Albuquerque Pride President Jesse Lopez

Friends,

In recent months, the mass media has brought awareness to the rise in GLBT suicides across our country. The sad truth and reality is that for far too long there has been a silence when dealing and coping with the issue of GLBT suicides, GLBT bullying, and GLBT discrimination.

We must rise to the occasion so those members of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender community that live in fear, self hate and silence are silent no more. For those in other countries that fear for their lives because a person can still be legally killed for being GLBT, we are silent no more. For every struggling member of our community, we are silent no more.

Together, as a united front we are silent no more. Please join me, as we take a stand together at Morningside Park, Monday October 11 at 7:00 pm for National Coming Out Day. Coming together as one community so others have the courage to stand and be strong. This is not a protest or even a rally, rather its people coming together to be one voice.

Together in Pride,

Jesse A. Lopez

The Chance of a Lifetime

PJ Sedillo and Tony Ross put everything on the line for Albuquerque Pride

Once you go, you know. Gay pride events have an energy unlike any other. They're blobs of Silly Putty rolling on a calendar, collecting a year's worth of impressions into one big, colorful gob. There's the romance of Valentine's Day, the all-American sizzle of Fourth of July, the candy-coated spectacle of Halloween, the goodwill and generosity of Christmas. And everyone buys shots like it's their birthday. Minus the shots thing, it's no wonder children love pride parades.
