On the evenings of March 8 and 9, 2013, the UNM Department of Theatre & Dance will present a double bill of masterworks by their MFA candidates. "OPHELIA," an exceptional work of dance theatre by Jacqueline M. Garcia, draws inspiration from Shakespeare’s "Hamlet." Garcia’s work explores the intense subject matter of madness and fragmentation of the mind and self. Crystal Fullmer will present "Heritage Journey," an extraordinary work that explores the choreographer’s personal heritage and identity. The choreography tells a story through the thrilling combination of athleticism, musicality and delicate vulnerability. The performance will take place at Rodey Theatre, located in the UNM Center of the Arts. Tickets are $12 for the general public, $10 for faculty and seniors, and $8 for UNM staff & students. Tickets are available at all UNM ticket offices, online at unmtickets.com, or by calling 925-5858. For more information, please call 277-4332. Landmark Musicals animates Independence Day with song and dance
It takes a special kind of nerd to appreciate the joy that is 1776. One must be equal parts musical-theater geek, history buff and lover of all things patently silly. If you’re the type that gets a kick out of seeing the Founding Fathers dancing around in funny wigs and singing whimsical songs about the Declaration of Independence, 1776 is a great pleasure.

Like the Dickens
Little thieves steal the show
But watching Oliver!, aside for a few key moments, isn’t sad. It’s heartwarming, and it’s sweet, and once the plot picks up and all the main actors are introduced, it’s pretty much fantastic. Such is the way of catchy songs and lovable characters—they obscure the grim and the grime.

I Fall to Pieces (When I Go To Musical Theater)
A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline brings the music of a country master to Rodey Theatre
A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline is more a concert than a piece of theater. Its nearly two-hour run time (intermission included) consists almost entirely of songs by the titular singer, performed by Laurie Finnegan. This isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it’s very good. A Closer Walk is a well-polished piece suited for a city larger than ours; it will blow the dust off your sense of nostalgia and leave you with a bittersweet glow.
