The Daily Word

Lotaburger will be getting makeovers. Bye bye squinty Uncle Sam guy.

If you follow proper procedure, yes, you can keep that 200 pound mountain lion roadkill you found beside the highway.

"South Valley torture chamber".

How the artwork behind politicians giving speeches or interviews is intended to influence our perception of that politician.

At about 51 minutes into this recent speech, Trump starts using the word "win" A LOT.

UN drug policy has remained pretty much unchanged since 1961.

Does carrying a firearm make you safer? Probably not, but it dramatically changes your perception of the world around you.

Safety Woman educational film from the '70s will make your day. Or maybe you're more of an Osmonds-covering-Steely Dan kinda person.

Now Hear This, Vol. I

Welcome to the first installment of "Now Hear This," a column to chronicle my obsessive-compulsive sonic studies, archaelogical and futurist alike. And while here with me, expect everything from old and alt.country to rocanrol to dark wave to Italo disco to queercore to punk to riot grrrl to noise to minimal synth and everywhere in between ... Except smooth jazz, (most) contemporary country and reggae. They just don't do it for me. As they say—who are they, anyway?—there's no accounting for taste.

I embrace that motto and am wholly dependent on my musical addiction to transcend the banality of everyday life. Don't get me wrong. I really dig my life. Getting to collaborate with and work alongside an uber-talented editorial staff and freelancers every day is, like, the dream. But sometimes you simply have to hear something new or unfamiliar that excites and challenges you. This column will serve as complement to my colleague Mark Lopez' wide-ranging Rooster Roundabout series.

My soundscape and its population, past and present, have benefited from the hive mind of many wonderful humans, ranging from my vinyl historian pal Mike Harper in Huntsville, Tex., who first exposed me to the music nerd bug;

to synth/post-punk/ industrial maven and Systems of Romance curator Frankie Teardrop, also of cold wave/post-punk band The Harrow;

to Dirt City denizen Derek Caterwaul, notably of KUNM Radio and Low Life at Blackbird Buvette, who remains one of my favorite DJs after more than a decade of listening to his Music to Soothe the Savage Beast and Overnight Freeform shows;

to Burqueña Tahnee Udero aka DJ Tahnee, whose massive knowledge base is supplanted by exquisite taste, and her solo project TAHNZZ garnered serious listmas praise in 2013;

to Mello Sanchez aka DJ Mello, an uber-talented DJ and pastry chef and one of my best friends;

to northerly neighbor Lorrie Edmonds, curator of I Will Not Return Your Records, which I can safely say is one of the best radio shows on the planet.

So this is a shout-out to all y'all strange, kindred music nerds, both the ones I know and the ones I haven't met yet.

Sex and Its Discontents

Lost Sex Survey Graphs Reveal the Vibrator is King

As if you didn’t know

Last year we asked IF you used sex toys. This year we asked WHICH ONES? Due to space constraints in print, this precious data failed to make it into the feature’s final cut, but now the truth can be told: the vibrator is mightier than the dildo.

Not to disrespect the dildo, of course, which consistently ranks in the top three across all genders and preferences, but the good vibe is apparently more things to more people. Gay and bisexual male respondents were the only group in which the vibrator failed to rank as the most popular sex toy (trumped by both dildo and cock ring, but still a respectable third place). The ladies in the audience, on the other hand—gay, straight and in-between—gave the vibrator an overwhelming 80% and higher approval rating, with straight dudes also ranking it #1. (Clearly these guys know where the missus keeps her Hitachi Magic Wand.)

Gay, bi and straight men also appeared to agree that having a cock is a great reason to have a cock ring, as the #2 sex toy for boys remains consistent across all sexual preferences. That’s what I call solidarity, gentlemen.

You can draw your own conclusions from our rather unscientific poll, but one thing is for sure: for Alibi readers, sex time is tool time.

A parking lot taco burger feast

Food

Burger Talk

Bob’s Burgers’ taco burgers

Earlier this week, my husband and I went to a used appliance store on Central near Atrisco and purchased an early-Aughts Kenmore washer and dryer set. As we made our way back Downtown we passed a Bob’s Burgers and decided to celebrate our thrifty purchase. Having been vegetarian for many, many years until recently, I’ve still not had (or really desired) the chance to feast on the world’s cornucopia of meaty delicacies. Therefore, I’d never eaten a taco burger, which seems like a ridiculous food, so I was skeptical of its reported deliciousness.

I have to say, eating a taco burger for the first time was like when I gave into the fact that Steely Dan is an excellent band—so processed, so cheesy, so good! I wouldn’t indulge in a cheese food and chile-covered hamburger patty inside of a taco shell, or the jazz rock of Can’t Buy a Thrill every day, or every month. Maybe not even every year. But it’s nice knowing these things are there waiting for me.

[By the way, the new appliances are swell, and we spent $300 (with free delivery and a lifetime warranty) instead of $3,000. Go bargains.]

Dr. Dog, learning a new song
Jason Nocito

Music Magnified

Dr. Dog Makes a House Call

On its cross-country tour two years ago, Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog—a quirky, lovable indie-soul band—packed bars that held 200 people when the fire department wasn’t looking. Last year, Dr. Dog electrified crowds at 400 to 500 capacity clubs, and this spring the endearing, addicting band is filling even bigger theaters. Luckily for New Mexicans, Dr. Dog still loves to play the rare smaller gig, and getting bigger certainly hasn’t made the band cocky.
