Winning Earwig Mix: "Phonographic Memory"

Hear It At: alibi.com/earwig

What do you do when you’re not working?

Dig for records, listen to records, read, cook, rent movies from
Burning Paradise and listen to "This American Life."

What are you reading?

I’m always reading the latest issue of
Wax Poetics magazine. I just finished [Obama’s] The Audacity of Hope and Love Is a Mix Tape [Rob Sheffield, Three Rivers Press]. Next book I was thinking of reading is Follow the Music: The Life and High Times of Elektra Records in the Great Years of American Pop Culture [Jac Holzman and Gavan Daws, Jawbone Press].

Your title is the best, and so is your playlist. What sort of "phonographic memories" inspired this very thoughtful, soulful mix?

Thanks. I’m glad you liked it. Made my day. Well, I feel like I have a "phonographic memory" in the sense that I equate memories and life in general with music and songs I love. These specific songs are just favorite songs on records I’ve been playing a lot of this fall. There is nothing better than cooking a nice meal for people you care about while listening to a great record play.

Are you a musician of some sort?

No. I own a short-scale bass, but I have a lot of practicing to do.

Anything else you’d like to share about yourself?

I love to DJ—for myself, friends and family, my cats, and anyone who loves soul, funk, jazz, and hip-hop.

As a winner of the Alibi's Earwig playlist competition, Tahnee wins $10 in her choice of goodies at Charley's 33s and CDs. (To which Tahnee said, "Fantastic. I love Charley's!") Visit alibi.com/earwig to hear her righteous mix or make your own.
