Alt.country and Western is one of the most honest genres to emerge from America within the past couple of decades. As popular country music continues to dissolve into the shimmering, surface froth of “just pop,” the alternative remains immersed in vast landscapes, organic production and sincere articulations. The listener gets a traditional kind of music rounded out with a modern vibe.

Citizens of Earth: The spaceship known as Leeches of Lore flies into Burt’s Tiki Lounge (313 Gold SW) this week, pounding high hats and Mai Tais while shredding the clothing right off your body. The Spittin’ Cobras (which contains members of ’80s psycho-sexual punkers The Dwarves and German industrial band KMFDM) joins the intergalactic mission along with Black Guys. The rock invasion, which shall only be beheld by those over 21 years of age, can be sighted free of charge Downtown near the tenth hour on Tuesday, Dec. 8. (Jessica Cassyle Carr)
Muni Kulasinghe’s howling vocals, his violin skittering across the music like beads of water on a hot skillet. John Sandlin’s ax felling bar after bar of music with ferocious dexterity. Jared Putnam’s slaphappy bass and slyly sweet vocals. Drummer Fernando Garavito’s irresistibly low-down grooves. It’s all here on six covers the group has perfected over the last few years on the bandstand. The many high points include the churchy baroque intro to “House of the Rising Sun,” which then descends into fevered desperation, Sandlin’s solo on “Belleville Rendez-Vous” drunkenly dancing across a fence top, and the deliriously locked-in groove between Putnam and Garavito on “Minnie the Moocher.” “Frère Jacques,” “Straight Up” and “La Mer” round out the collection, each with its own ear-opening moments of inspired lunacy. While paying close attention to every tiny detail—the dabs of echo on “Jacques,” the perfectly timed cat’s yowl on “Belleville”—Le Chat plays with a demonic abandon that makes you suspect they’re having even more fun that we are. Besides starring as the ultra-creepy Dr. Daniel Schrebe in 1998's Dark City—a role for which he will undoubtedly be remembered for his perplexingly halting delivery—Kiefer Sutherland is also an up-and-coming musician, having chosen the gritty genre of Americana as the next world to conquer and hold helpless in a starless miasma of doomed sleep. Just kidding. Dude's second album as a country rocker, Reckless & Me, has garnered both the attention of folks over in Nashville and a host of radio listeners as well. '90s Grand Opening Party • 69 Boyz • hip-hop, bass
We might get in trouble for saying so, but the Miami bass subgenre of hip-hop has some of the hottest dang beats out there. We'll never forget the time Daily Lobo staffer Juliette Torrez played “Me So Horny” in the college newsroom back in 1989. You just can't unhear stuff like that. Flash forward 30 years and other bassy bands from deep in the panhandle are still rocking it. Check out a saucy second generation of that Southern flavor on Friday, Dec. 13 at 8pm when Hush Ultra NightLife hosts a '90s Grand Opening Party featuring the somewhat still notorious 69 Boyz. Big Head Todd and the Monsters • alternative, blues
After more than 30 years of touring and with an almost cultlike following of mountain-sprung funk fairies gamboling along with them, Big Head Todd and the Monsters are a jam band, which is a very American thing. Their music—distilled by determination, a deep groove and driving around the mountain West and Left Coast in a van called “the Colonel”—is pretty, pretty good. They can still belt out tuneage like “Resignation Superman” and cover classics like Howlin' Wolf's “Smokestack Lightning” with authenticity and rolling thunder (no, not the band, you silly Deadhead!). Anyway, they stop in Burque on their annual winter tour and play at Route 66 Casino Hotel's Legends Theater on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 8pm. Tickets for this all-ages space jam range in price from $28 to $59, so check it out; your seasonal cold will never feel the same.
