Letters: Why Focus On Progress?

Why Focus On Progress?

August March from the Weekly Alibi has long criticized me for using “reality as a cudgel” over the heads of Republicans like Donald Trump and Susana Martinez.

As the American historian Timothy Snyder wrote in the book
On Tyranny in 2017, “To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power, because there is no basis upon which to do so! If nothing is true, then all is spectacle. The biggest wallet pays for the most blinding lights.”

He also wrote, “The founding fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.”

The
Alibi and the Democratic New Mexico Congressional delegations’ sole focus on progressive issues, rather than President Trump’s crimes, are a tragic mistake! Why is a lone Republican Tea Party Congressman like Rep. Amash acting fiercer than Sen. Heinrich, Sen. Udall, Rep. Haaland, Rep. Lujan and Rep. Torres-Small when it comes to upholding a very basic oath to the United States Constitution? This perilous moment in American history calls for Statesmen/Stateswomen, not politicians sweating their next election. If our leaders lack this courage, resign!

2020 and long after are not about “progressive policies” but about democracy! It doesn’t matter what Democrats support in their platform as long as the rule of law and the Constitution are on there. That’s all that matters today. Healthcare, deferred. The economy, deferred. Race relations, deferred. Those will all come when sanity is restored and democracy is fortified. It’s all about Article I powers!

In 1951 Hannah Arendt wrote, “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e. the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e. the standards of thought) no longer exist.”

Here in reality, 2 + 2 = 4, human freedom (like owning a gun) comes with personal responsibility, climate change is related to the explosion of the human (anthropomorphic) population over 75 years on a 4.5 billion-year-old planet, subsidized contraception and family planning reduce abortions/poverty, and contrary to what Joshua Lee believes, the 2016 DNC primary was not “rigged.”
