Slapfish
Cuisine: Seafood
I know what you’re thinking: a seafood shack in the desert? How on earth could this be any good? But it truly is. Slapfish prides itself in sourcing fish from sustainable farms and fishers, which means that what’s in your taco is pretty high caliber stuff. Their fish and chips are as greasily satisfying as you could want, and the ultimate fish taco (famously large enough you’ll need both hands to eat it) tastes like a surf trip down to Baja. Crack a couple cold ones on their patio and dig into the catch of the day.

Flying Star Café
Sun-Thurs: 6am-10pm
Fri-Sat: 6am-11pm (hours can change without notice)
$$ • Vegetarian Available • Gluten-free available • Booze Served • Craft Beer • Wine • Catering • Take Out / To-Go • Wireless Internet • Dog-Friendly
Winner of Best Casual Dining, Best Veggie Burger, Best Toast, Best Healthy Breakfast and Best Desserts in our restaurant polls. Sure, you go in thinking you’ll be good and get a skinny latte, scrambled egg whites and a side of turkey and green chile sausage, but five minutes later somebody’s saying “eclair” and the voice is coming from your mouth. But, boy, do they taste good.

Ichiban Japanese Restaurant
Lunch: Mon-Sat 11am-3pm,
Dinner: Sun 4:30pm-9pm, Mon-Thurs 5pm-9pm, Fri-Sat 5pm-10 pm (hours can change without notice)
Whether you’re a certified sushi lover or have never tried the stuff before, Ichiban can make you a roll you’ll love. Heck, they even make vegetarian rolls that aren’t half bad. Their lunch specials are a reasonably-priced way to try several different things on the menu at once. Ask the server to recommend some sake and make sure you try the yellowtail roll.

Il Vicino
Sun-Thu 11am-11pm
Fri-Sat 11am-midnight (hours can change without notice)
Il Vicino’s thin-crusted, gourmet-topped pizzas are perennial favorites among Alibi readers, but the big salads are equally popular. Order at the register and a server brings the food to your table, making weekday lunches speedy. The open kitchen gives you something to stare at while you wait. Stop in for a quick lunch or a late afternoon microbrew on the patio.
Little Anita's
Tues-Sat: 7am-8pm
Sun-Mon: 7am-2pm (hours can change without notice)
Cuisine: New Mexican
Little Anita's menu is New Mexican to the core with enchiladas, burritos, carne adovada and stuffed sopaipillas. The red chile is generally milder than their green but is seasoned just right. Consistency, generous portions and fair prices make Little Anita's an Albuquerque mainstay—not to mention its many locations ranging from full-service dining to quick and easy take-out counters. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Satellite Coffee
$ • Vegetarian Available • Gluten-free available • Take Out / To-Go • Outdoor Patio • Wireless Internet
Satellite serves up not only coffee but also burritos, sandwiches, desserts and pastries. This is a good choice if you need a quick pick-me-up or you’re hungry late--it’s open until at least 9pm most nights. We recommend the black velvet which is a vanilla coffee with five shots of espresso.

Thai Kitchen
Mon-Fri 11am-3pm, 4:30-ppm; Sat noon-9pm (hours can change without notice)
Cuisine: Thai
At the crossroads of the far North Valley and the Westside sits Thai Kitchen. From the outside looking in, hanging out at the end of an average-looking strip mall, it’s an easy place to overlook. That would be a mistake. The egg rolls are top-notch, and the spicy Jungle noodles with beef are out of this world! We highly recommend that you go and thai something new at this warm little joint.

Dim sum and sushi under the same roof? It's like a dream come true. The beautiful interior of this vintage filling station just East of the federal courthouse is a marked change from the cozy home interior near the university where AmerAsia used to reside. Hyangami Yi's food is just as good as ever. Expect her familiar dim sum plates and buns, and feel free to order sushi you've never had in this town from her brother Woo Youn. He's got all the usual sashimi and nigiri in his adjoining restaurant, but it's his original, creative rolls that really set Sumo apart—that, and the adorable little train that ferries your pickled ginger around the sushi bar.

Artichoke Café
Lunch:
Mon-Fri: 11am-2:30pm
Dinner:
Sun-Thu: 5pm-9pm
Fri-Sat: 5pm-10pm
Happy Hour:
Mon-Fri: 3pm-6pm
Closed Sunday (hours can change without notice)
It just makes sense to order the steamed artichoke at the Artichoke Café. Slathered in lemon-caper oil and a raspberry vinaigrette, it makes a great starter before trying a heftier order of grilled curried chicken or sliced steak. Once your upscale lunch or dinner has concluded, adjourn to the sexy wine bar next door. The wine list is actually a bound leather tome featuring a massive assortment of wines. Prices start at a decent $28 or $30 a bottle and zoom into the upper stratospheres of frivolity. You can also order select vintages by the half-bottle or glass. You'll love the front-facing windows, curvy wooden bar and comfy seating.

Alibi recommends: Any of their signature drinks will pair wonderfully with the menu. The raviolis are especially wonderful.

This is the spot for satisfying pre- or post-movie cravings with a menu that traverses the Asian continent. Think pho and pad Thai with a side of Japanese cold sesame noodles. The warming Thai soup is especially restorative. Inside, it’s clean, classy and calm and open until 11pm on weekends.

Barelas Coffee House
Mon-Fri 7:30am-3pm
Sat 7:30am-2:30pm
Closed Sun (hours can change without notice)
Cuisine: New Mexican
This homey New Mexican joint is popular, and though it’s much bigger inside than you can tell from the street, regulars pack the place tighter than a tamal. Barelas is known for their huevos rancheros, and they are tasty here, slathered in a particularly good red chile and served with a fresh flour tortilla.

The Brew
Mon-Fri: 7am-6pm
Sat: 9am-4pm
Sun: closed (hours can change without notice)
Cuisine: Coffee/Tea/Espresso
The Brew has made a lasting mark on the local scene with its comfortable seating, low-key and classy vibe, fantastic baristas and superior beverage menu. Our favorites include the butter coffee, the red chile mocha and the cortado—a drink that tastes like a concentrated latté.

Brixens
Sun-Thu 11am-midnight
Fri-Sat 11am-1am (hours can change without notice)
With everything all shiny and new, you may feel overwhelmed on entry but allow the friendly staff guide you to your table and own little slice of heaven. While the menu is on the concise side, all the dishes here are executed to perfection. While you wait, watch the game or play a game—a board game, that is! With all the hubbub happening at night Downtown, this is a perfectly chill place to escape for a drink or two.

Café Lush
Mon-Fri 7am-2:30pm
Sat 8am-1pm
Closed Sun (hours can change without notice)
Café Lush is a daydream of the way things might be in some future hybrid of Europe and Albuquerque. It’s an urban café on a quiet street corner with a small menu of simple, well-crafted dishes and a pledge to use local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible. But unlike cuisine from across the pond, the red and green chile here do not disappoint.

Cecilia’s Café
Cecilia is the matriarch who dreamed up of one of Albuquerque’s best breakfast burritos and red chile. Setting close to the heart of Downtown on Sixth Street and Silver, Cecilia makes the food herself. The red chile here is no joke and the prices are a pretty great value, too.
