Little Anita's menu is New Mexican to the core with enchiladas, burritos, carne adovada and stuffed sopaipillas. The red chile is generally milder than their green but is seasoned just right. Satellite serves up not only coffee but also burritos, sandwiches, desserts and pastries. This is a good choice if you need a quick pick-me-up or you’re hungry late--it’s open until at least 9pm most nights. We recommend the black velvet which is a vanilla coffee with five shots of espresso.

This homey New Mexican joint is popular, and though it’s much bigger inside than you can tell from the street, regulars pack the place tighter than a tamal. Barelas is known for their huevos rancheros, and they are tasty here, slathered in a particularly good red chile and served with a fresh flour tortilla.

The Brew has made a lasting mark on the local scene with its comfortable seating, low-key and classy vibe, fantastic baristas and superior beverage menu. Our favorites include the butter coffee, the red chile mocha and the cortado—a drink that tastes like a concentrated latté.

Café Lush

700 Tijeras Ave NW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM 87102
(505) 508-0164
cafelushabq.com
Mon-Fri 7am-2:30pm Sat 8am-1pm Closed Sun (hours can change without notice)

Café Lush is a daydream of the way things might be in some future hybrid of Europe and Albuquerque. It’s an urban café on a quiet street corner with a small menu of simple, well-crafted dishes and a pledge to use local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible. But unlike cuisine from across the pond, the red and green chile here do not disappoint.

Albuquerque NM 87102
(505) 243-7070
Mon-Fri: 7am-2pm Sat-Sun: 7am-3pm (hours can change without notice)

Cecilia is the matriarch who dreamed up of one of Albuquerque’s best breakfast burritos and red chile. Setting close to the heart of Downtown on Sixth Street and Silver, Cecilia makes the food herself. The red chile here is no joke and the prices are a pretty great value, too.

The flashing neon dachsund beckons to hot dog mecca, where we indulge in not just the hot dogs but also essentials like tater tots and Frito pie. Get your dogs to go and race home to enjoy them with a few brews. Or go inside the Dog House, find a seat at the tiny counter and nurse one of their damn fine milkshakes.

Espresso Fino

222 Gold Ave SW (Downtown)

(575) 779-6078
cafegiuseppe.com
Mon-Fri: 7am-4pm Sat-Sun: 8 am-3pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastLunch
Cozy but not cramped and comfy without excess, Espresso Fino is a gem of a coffee shop tucked into a narrow building Downtown. One (really nice) man runs the register and espresso machine, working fast but managing a perfect pour each time. Order an espresso and get snug near their small communal library or sit outside and watch traffic on Gold pass by. Whether you need a quick fix or have hours to fill, Espresso Fino is an ideal spot for a personalized cup of very fine joe.

Hartford Square’s menu changes weekly but always features quality, locally sourced ingredients in dine-in and take-out options. The salads are stocked with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and there are always a few hot options such as the Canadian salmon or ratatouille pot pie. The tea selection is simply divine. Try the Sandia spice tea over ice, a steaming cup of an herbal-blood orange blend or go for broke with a vanilla tea latte. Get here early enough, and you’ll get first crack at the crossword in the house copy of the New York Times.

You already know and love Humble Coffee. While their Lomas location is a home to coffee nerds, first dates and laptop nomads alike, their new Downtown spot provides all that plus a lot more space to stretch out. Get yourself a breakfast burrito and a single-origin cuppa, then find a spot on the ziggurat bleachers out back. (Go and you’ll see what we mean.)

Java Joe’s

www.downtownjavajoes.com
Mon-Sun: 6:30am-3:30pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastLunch
Java Joe’s boasts a cool ’60s Haight-Ashbury feel but isn’t jam-packed with hippies or anything. It attracts a diverse crowd of cyclists, artists, musicians, hipsters and even grown-ups simply searching for a good cup of joe (albeit one made with house-roasted beans). From freshly baked scones and waffles to sandwiches and salads, the menu is simple and satisfying. Warning: Joe’s breakfast burritos may cause you to audibly but the regulars here will totally get it.

500 Central Ave SW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 242-2582
Mon-Sun: 7am-6pm (hours can change without notice)

We love Lindy’s retro décor, convenient Downtown location and $5 pitchers of beer. The food here is typical diner fare with a healthy number of New Mexican and Greek specialties thrown into the mix and served in hearty portions.

New Mexico Beef Jerky Company

1527 Fourth Street NW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM 87102
505-242-6121
newmexicobeefjerky.com
Mon-Fri 7am-5pm Sat 8am-5pm Sun: Closed (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastLunchDinner
Cuisine: New Mexican
This fantastic take on New Mexican cuisine features flamin’ hot, savory chile, melt-in-your-mouth chicharrones and sleeper-hit huevos rancheros. These hearty burritos and platters fuel a working human all day. As the name indicates, this family restaurant got its start making carne seca (and they still do) but branched out into an efficient New Mexican kitchen. The food is served on paper and styrofoam, the service is attentive and polite, and the food is always perfecto. The most unusual burrito or sandwich ingredient is the “old-fashioned” fried bologna, which is far more delicious than you think and is served, like everything else, with lots of chile.
