Satellite serves up not only coffee but also burritos, sandwiches, desserts and pastries. This is a good choice if you need a quick pick-me-up or you’re hungry late--it’s open until at least 9pm most nights. We recommend the black velvet which is a vanilla coffee with five shots of espresso.

While the menu is on the concise side, all the dishes here are executed to perfection. While you wait, watch the game or play a game—a board game, that is! With all the hubbub happening at night Downtown, this is a perfectly chill place to escape for a drink or two.

Café Lush is a daydream of the way things might be in some future hybrid of Europe and Albuquerque. It’s an urban café on a quiet street corner with a small menu of simple, well-crafted dishes and a pledge to use local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible. But unlike cuisine from across the pond, the red and green chile here do not disappoint.

Cheese & Coffee has some 20 sandwich choices, including a fruit and cheese, a gyro and a French dip, awaiting the hungry diner. The Sicilian sandwich—a pepperoni, capicola and mozzarella concoction on French bread—is most excellent. Try a slice of the moist and springy house-baked lemon cake with just enough tartness to complement the rich cream cheese frosting.

This ray of sunshine in EDo serves gourmet breakfast and lunch, sells house-made English muffins and even has a mini-shop filled with goodies like honey, jams, mustards and vinegars, not to mention cookbooks, serving vessels and greeting cards. The tiny wine list is just as chic—five reds and five whites marked on a chalkboard and constantly changing. This list is well thought-out and offers some of the most esoteric varietals and brands available in town. There’s also a large, shady patio, incredible house-made cupcakes and adorable macarons.

Hartford Square’s menu changes weekly but always features quality, locally sourced ingredients in dine-in and take-out options. The salads are stocked with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and there are always a few hot options such as the Canadian salmon or ratatouille pot pie. The tea selection is simply divine. Try the Sandia spice tea over ice, a steaming cup of an herbal-blood orange blend or go for broke with a vanilla tea latte. Get here early enough, and you’ll get first crack at the crossword in the house copy of the New York Times.

Humble Coffee

You already know and love Humble Coffee. While their Lomas location is a home to coffee nerds, first dates and laptop nomads alike, their new Downtown spot provides all that plus a lot more space to stretch out. Get yourself a breakfast burrito and a single-origin cuppa, then find a spot on the ziggurat bleachers out back. (Go and you’ll see what we mean.)

This petite Downtown restaurant serves tres magnifique French cuisine. Le Troquet has a cozy atmosphere and sumptuous dishes so pull up a chair. Open for lunch and dinner, Le Troquet offers vegetarian dishes, seafood and even dessert. Don’t leave without a fresh-baked baguette.

As its name reveals, the focus of this restaurant is tapas—dainty plates of beautifully presented succulent morsels. And, as you may have guessed, there’s vino aplenty. At this breakfast-all-day joint, Vinaigrette mastermind Erin Wade serves wholesome takes on classic diner food. Think pancakes made with teff flour and full of kale, cabbage and flax seeds, smothered with spicy-sweet mayo and Japanese okonomi sauce. Or a fried egg sandwich on house-made sourdough bread and spread with yogurt. The drink menu is extensive, and includes coffee and tea drinks, beer and wine, smoothies, juices, health shots and warming elixirs. The stylish space is as lovely as the food, and there’s a small shop stocked with books and lifestyle goods that fit the Modern General ethos.

The cavernous, ground-floor counterpart to Anodyne, Sister is a space that’s tailor-made for happenings. This is a perfect spot to enjoy a dip into the vast draft beer selection with comrades after work or boogie to a multitude of live bands that occupy its stage nearly every night. Foodies must try the kimchi fries and the divine brisket tacos.

Slate is on a quiet, blink-and-you-miss-it avenue between Fifth and Sixth Street, nestled right in the heart of the legal district. Like the space itself, the menu is polished and unintimidating. Don’t miss the ahi tuna sandwich (with gluten-free bread available!). It's all very affordable for its level of quality. There’s also a fabulous wine loft with the wines listed by style—“just a little sweet,” “ABC: Anything But Chardonnay” or “sexy, elegant, austere”—not varietal or region. Demystifying the label like this makes it easy for patrons to pair wine and food.

Matt DiGregory, owner of Range Café, updated this 1938 Texaco Station to include a modern kitchen, large, sleek, jazz-inspired dining areas and a small front patio. Think San Francisco meets downtown Albuquerque. The menu is composed of upscale comfort food, much of it using local ingredients, and it’s priced accordingly (without being too inhibitive). Don’t forget your rock-candy stick to stir your coffee (or just eat off the stick like you did when The Beach was still around).

From the kill to the grill, Tucanos makes all your dreams come true. That is, if you dream about meaty hunks of marinated flesh sliced right at your table. This lively, busy and fun Brazilian-themed restaurant next to the Century 14 movie theater is open late.
