Satellite serves up not only coffee but also burritos, sandwiches, desserts and pastries. This is a good choice if you need a quick pick-me-up or you’re hungry late--it’s open until at least 9pm most nights. We recommend the black velvet which is a vanilla coffee with five shots of espresso.

Dim sum and sushi under the same roof? It's like a dream come true. The beautiful interior of this vintage filling station just East of the federal courthouse is a marked change from the cozy home interior near the university where AmerAsia used to reside. Hyangami Yi's food is just as good as ever. Expect her familiar dim sum plates and buns, and feel free to order sushi you've never had in this town from her brother Woo Youn. He's got all the usual sashimi and nigiri in his adjoining restaurant, but it's his original, creative rolls that really set Sumo apart—that, and the adorable little train that ferries your pickled ginger around the sushi bar.

Boiler Monkey

Pioneers in the Albuquerque bustaurant scene, the Boiler Monkey creates and serves savory and sweet crepes. Both the serving area and the fresh food are designed with delightful attention to detail. Enjoy a Burque turkey crepe or flavorful lox and be sure to save room for a sweet crepe like the Navidad with blueberry pie filling and creamy goat cheese for dessert.

Café Lush is a daydream of the way things might be in some future hybrid of Europe and Albuquerque. It’s an urban café on a quiet street corner with a small menu of simple, well-crafted dishes and a pledge to use local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible. But unlike cuisine from across the pond, the red and green chile here do not disappoint.

Hartford Square’s menu changes weekly but always features quality, locally sourced ingredients in dine-in and take-out options. The salads are stocked with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and there are always a few hot options such as the Canadian salmon or ratatouille pot pie. The tea selection is simply divine. Try the Sandia spice tea over ice, a steaming cup of an herbal-blood orange blend or go for broke with a vanilla tea latte. Get here early enough, and you’ll get first crack at the crossword in the house copy of the New York Times.

While their Lomas location is a home to coffee nerds, first dates and laptop nomads alike, their new Downtown spot provides all that plus a lot more space to stretch out. At this breakfast-all-day joint, Vinaigrette mastermind Erin Wade serves wholesome takes on classic diner food. Think pancakes made with teff flour and full of kale, cabbage and flax seeds, smothered with spicy-sweet mayo and Japanese okonomi sauce. Or a fried egg sandwich on house-made sourdough bread and spread with yogurt. The drink menu is extensive, and includes coffee and tea drinks, beer and wine, smoothies, juices, health shots and warming elixirs. The stylish space is as lovely as the food, and there’s a small shop stocked with books and lifestyle goods that fit the Modern General ethos.

Park Avenue Pizzeria
This hidden Downtown gem (formerly known as Firenze) serves simple, delicious pizza. Additionally, they have salads and desserts available. They also cater, dragging their wood-burning stove wherever they go. They even deliver to those within a 1.5 mile radius of their location. The Salsiccia pizza is insanely savory.

It’s not deep-dish, but the puffed up, buttery crust will warm Midwestern hearts, as will the Fire Eater pie—a monument to capsaicin, it scathes taste buds with pepperoni, jalapeños, green chile and hot giardiniera relish. With gluten-free crust options, it’s a perfect spot for groups with opposing dietary needs, and with several locations, you can have it all delivered right to your front door!

Slate is on a quiet, blink-and-you-miss-it avenue between Fifth and Sixth Street, nestled right in the heart of the legal district. Like the space itself, the menu is polished and unintimidating. Don’t miss the ahi tuna sandwich (with gluten-free bread available!). It's all very affordable for its level of quality. There’s also a fabulous wine loft with the wines listed by style—“just a little sweet,” “ABC: Anything But Chardonnay” or “sexy, elegant, austere”—not varietal or region. Demystifying the label like this makes it easy for patrons to pair wine and food.

Villa Myriam’s Downtown shop The Brew has long been a local favorite for many years, and their new (as of late 2017) roasting facility and coffee shop is following suit. The coffee is delicious and as freshly roasted as you can get, the service is friendly, and the new patio is a perfect place to catch some rays and relax. They also have a menu of pastries and small plates (like the fan favorite poached eggs on avocado toast).

How we long to return for another bowl o’ papas filled with hash browns, cheese, green chile and an over-easy egg. The decor here is minimalist-to-nonexistant, but Zendo makes up for the bare-bones aesthetic by serving an array of near-perfect espresso drinks and by committing to support local art and music events. Speciality beverages include a Mexican latte—white chocolate and cinammon—and, of course, the Heisenberg—made with six shots of espresso and dusted with sky blue sugar crystals. At least, we hope that’s sugar. And don’t forget to order a chai tea latte for the road.

Rising up from the asphalt sea of the Talin Market parking lot, Gen Kai is a Japanese restaurant that offers an oasis from the heat and chaos of the International District. Sushi is on hand, naturally, and salt-brothed ramen, but the real star here are the donburi bowls. Our favorite is the oyako don, in which dashi-soaked rice is topped with a fried combination of chicken and egg with two forms of onion: bulb and green.

Le Bistro

This Vietnamese joint is a triple threat of sit-down restaurant, a take-out spot and a bubble tea cafe. Their menu is huge and friendly to all sorts of dietary restrictions, and the food is super tasty. Some say that Le Bistro has the best pho in town. We say you should probably go and try it, just to see if what they say is true.

Pho Linh Vietnamese Grill

One of the few places in this city where you can get seven kinds of beef in one sitting. Or if you aren’t in a beefy mooood, try another authentic Vietnamese dish from the huge menu, like fresh spring rolls, wonton egg noodle soup or cashew tofu. Pair it up with a fresh coconut milk shake and you’ve got yourself a meal. This is a great hidden jewel of a date spot, so show your significant other that you’ve got class—and lemongrass (try some wrapped around the beef ball appetizer).
