The New Wave of Coffee Shops

Third wave coffee shops have taken over Albuquerque and I’m not upset about it. If you enjoy a good cup of coffee that’s roasted locally and harvested ethically, you’re probably not upset about it either. A handful of new coffee shops have opened around here in the past few months—some of them operated by already known and respected Burque roasters, and some of them opened by relative newcomers. All of them are locally-owned and a far sight better than Starbucks. Obviously.

Cutbow Coffee

1208 Rio Grande Blvd NW (North Valley)
Albuquerque NM 87104
Tue–Fri: 6am–2pm Sat-Sun: 7am–2pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: Breakfast
This craft coffee shop, opened by master roaster and New Mexico native Paul Gallegos, makes some fine coffee blends for you to enjoy by the cup or by the pound. If single-origin is more your thing, try the naturally processed Guatemala coffee, which has earthy, rich flavors and a mellow mouthfeel. All that said, you don’t need to be a coffee nerd to enjoy the tasty joe, good environment and friendly service.

Humble Coffee

505 Central Ave NW Ste. C (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM 87102
(505) 609-7099
Sun-Mon 7am-5pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastBrunch
You know and love Humble Coffee already. Their Lomas location is a great home for coffee nerds, first dates and laptop nomads alike, and this new Downtown spot provides all that plus a lot more space to boot. Get yourself a breakfast burrito and a single-origin cuppa, then find a spot for yourself on the ziggurat bleachers in the back. (Just go there and you’ll know what we mean.)

Little Bear Coffee

2632 Pennsylvania St NE (Northeast Heights)
Albuquerque NM 87110
Mon-Fri 6am-7pm Sat-Sun 7am-7pm (hours can change without notice)
Little Bear is a great place for a pleasantly unpretentious coffee experience. The people who work here are big sweeties (their barista hiring practice involved searching mainly for “people people”), and aren’t going to judge you if you don’t know what a Chemex is. They source their coffee from local roasters and have tons of local vendors and artists selling their stuff in the shop as well, so you know your purchase is going to put dollars directly into the pockets of Burqueños.

Villa Myriam Roasting

573 Commercial St NE (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM 87102
(505) 814-1599
Mon-Fri 7am-6pm Sat 8am-4pm Sun Closed (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastBrunch
Villa Myriam’s Downtown shop The Brew has long been a local favorite for many years, and their new (as of late 2017) roasting facility and coffee shop is following suit. The coffee is delicious and as freshly roasted as you can get, the service is friendly, and the new patio is a perfect place to catch some rays and relax. They also have a menu of pastries and small plates (like the fan favorite poached eggs on avocado toast).
