Franz Kafka once suggested that impatience is the one true cardinal sin. You have to wonder what Mr. I Woke Up One Morning To Discover I Was A Bug would have thought of the Iraq War. I suspect this fiasco might have amused him. The rest of us, though, are losing patience. Unfortunately, this won’t stop the president from asking for just a little bit more today in a speech to mark the fourth anniversary of this deeply misguided, hopelessly arrogant disaster. It’s hard to stay optimistic, despite some evidence the surge is working. Yet short-term success shouldn’t surprise anyone. Crackdowns always work … temporarily. The real test, obviously, is what happens after the crackdown.What does happen after the crackdown anyway? Does Cheney turn into a giant bug? That would be kind of cool. Maybe it’s the best we can hope for.
