Geoffrey Rush gives his usual bravura performance as the infamous Marquis de Sade. Confined to a madhouse in his later years, he uses a beautiful peasant girl (Kate Winslet) to smuggle out his scandalous writings. Ed Harris directs and stars in this emotional, energetic biopic about tempermental, alcoholic painting god Jackson Pollock. Harris (nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor) is magnificent in the title role (and does a fine job as director). Marisa Gay Hardin also landed an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actress as Pollock’s long-suffering girlfriend. An exciting, ultimately tragic look at artistic inspiration.
