That’s Spanish for “submission.” Artist Santiago Sierra carved the word, 15-meters tall, into the earth near the U.S./Mexico border in Ciudad Juarez. Then he filled them with concrete. It’s a reference to the sweatshop conditions in the area, among other things. He was going to complete the piece by lighting it on fire. Local government intervened and halted the burning, saying it would damage the environment. More than all those factories down there? One has to wonder.
