This is scary. Reporters Without Borders issued a condemnation of the “self-discipline pact,” signed by more than 20 Chinese providers (Yahoo.cn and MSN.cn included). The blog service providers are “encouraged” to get bloggers’ real names and addresses before the bloggers are allowed to post. The providers will have to keep this information, potentially opening the bloggers up to scrutiny from police.

“These companies have already in the past provided the police with information about their clients, resulting in arrests,” according to the release. This has all been handed down by the Internet Society of China, an offshoot of the information industry ministry.
