In spite of resistance from a group of bipartisan Senators, and huge resistance from two Democratic commissioners who say the issue was rushed, the Federal Communications Commission voted to loosen media-ownership rules just a couple of hours ago.

Now a company can own both a newspaper and a broadcast station in the 20 largest markets in the U.S.

But it sucks for you if you want more media options, more information and better local coverage

That’s a nice little x-mas present to President Bush and various billionaires from Republican Commission Chair Kevin Martin.

But it’s like they stole presents from under your tree (if, in fact, you were receiving greater media diversity from Santa).

In sum, this metaphor sucks, but you get the idea.
