Fox Broadcasting refused to pay a $91,000 indecency fine yesterday the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had slapped Fox with last month. The FCC handing out indecency fines like candy isn’t surprising, but the FCC ruling to fine Fox four years after the airing in question is a little ridiculous. Maybe I’m a radical, but scenes of digitally obscured nudity and whipped-cream-covered strippers isn’t high on my "offensive television" list. If that’s the criteria, how is MTV still on the air? Really, has the FCC ever watched Spring Break coverage?Fox refusing to pay the fine comes just after the Supreme Court announced it would hear the FCC v. Fox Television Stations in the fall. Fox filed the law suit in hopes of overturning fines from 2002 and 2003 based on live award show broadcasts where a certain four-letter word slipped on air. OK, FCC. We get it. You don’t like cuss words at all, especially when children may be watching. But swear words happen all the time. What are you going to do, fine every guy who screams profanities after dropping some heavy object on his foot? We could have your organization’s name changed to the Fine Cussing Commission, if you think it fits better. Or maybe the Fucking Communications Commission.
