Candidates And Their Fighter Planes

BOB SCHIEFFER: Can I just interrupt you? I have to say, Barack Obama hasn’t had any of these experiences either, nor has he ridden in a fighter plane and gotten shot down.

WES CLARK: I don’t think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president.

That’s Gen. Clark—a Sen. Barack Obama backer—on why McCain’s war record doesn’t necessarily apply. He also pointed out that McCain led a squadron in the Navy, but that it was during peacetime. McCain’s camp called it a shot at his war record.

And the
pundits and press got their panties all twisted up about it. Then Obama worked to distance himself from the comments by saying he will not question patriotism and later that he would not devalue McCain’s service.

What do you think? Is Clark (a presidential candidate in 2004), being practical about what we need a president to do? Or was it a low blow? Watch the clip and decide. Does experience in the military translate to good decisions as a leader of the military?
