It’s the last weekend of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, so if you haven’t seen the special shapes glodeo mass ascension, or whatever, Sunday morning is your last chance. BUT, if you are like me and don’t care for bourgeois trifles like balloons, perhaps you would like to investigate some of these colorful events.

New Mexico Black Expo

Friday and Saturday: Visit the African American Performing Arts Center (on the NM State Fairgrounds) tonight from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. for a screening of
The Souls of Black Girls and a Q&A with filmmaker Daphne Valerius. Saturday visit Civic Plaza (Third Street and Tijeras) for live music, dance, food, vendors, health screenings and more from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free and open to the public. Call 222-9442 for more.

Rockabilly Rescue

Saturday: Help the Rockabilly crowd raise money for their friend Josh who recently suffered a work-related accident. Music (rockabilly music), dance, food, drink, auctions and raffles are all part of this benefit which happens at 8 p.m. at the El Rey Theater. Admission is $7, and sorry kids, 21-and-over.

Bluegrass for a Blue State

Tuesday: Albuquerque’s bluegrass community pull out the spoons and fasten their overalls for Obama tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. at O’Neil’s Pub (Central and Washington). Help raise money for the democratic party with The Saltine Ramblers, Hobos in Limbo, The Porter Draw and more.
