Busking: The Ultimate Test?

If you haven’t read ”Pearls Before Breakfast” by Gene Weingarten of the Washington Post , you’ve got to give it a go.

The premise:

The paper asked one of the most acclaimed violinists in the world to play the Metro on one of the finest violins ever made. Joshua Bell, who can command prices of about $100 per seat, busked. The
Post called it “an unblinking assessment of public taste: In a banal setting at an inconvenient time, would beauty transcend?”

But an unforeseen side effect is that the trial pokes a hole in the notion that Bell, though expensive, is somehow better than any other busker. How good is Bell if Bell can’t busk?
