You put out an e-mail events newsletter called Subterranean Albuquerque. What’s your motivation for doing it?

I think it’s generally known as obsessive-compulsive disorder. But it also seems like there’s a real need for something that gathers information into one place for people. It provides a big picture of how vital the "un-dependent" music scene (not to mention other alternative media) is in this town.

I started at least five years ago, posting on KUNM message boards about upcoming shows—usually events I was promoting. Then I started adding stuff that friends were involved in and just anything else I found interesting. Which is whatever falls under my own very personal, and very inconsistent, definition of "underground," "D.I.Y." and other expressions of marginalized culture. I try to limit myself to the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area, if only because I don’t get out of town much. Gotta have some boundaries.

Do you play any instruments? What makes you such a passionate music fan?

Can’t play a note, but I do rock a mean DJ mix. For me, music has always been
the primary method of “Getting Free” in my head. It’s also my favorite means of communication. And I’ve had so many people turn me on to so much amazing sound, I feel obliged to try and do the same for others.

How many albums do you own?

Thousands of CDs and CDRs, hundreds of albums and singles. If you count the hundreds of cassette tapes as well, there’s probably several years’ worth of audio to listen to in my apartment. This hoarding aspect of my disorder is perhaps not so healthy—it’s getting a little out of hand. I’m starting to run out of room.
