In the 1930s, 13-year-old Voirrey Irving befriended a talking mongoose on the island of Manx. Gef the talking mongoose was rude and ill tempered, but the Irving family tolerated him for years before moving away. Now, 70 years later, Christopher Josiffe is researching the phenomenon and marking similarities between the accounts of Gef and those of reported polergeists. Talking animals are trouble with a capital T. If you’ve never read Saki’s mongoose tale “Sredni Vashtar” you might as well read it now. Or, if you’d prefer to watch the cartoon it can be arranged.
