According to an article in New York Magazine, the Hughes brothers are in negotiations to direct the long-gestating live-action version of Katsuhiro Otomo’s legendary 1988 anime feature Akira . Allegedly, the Hughes boys want to direct a two-part adaptation of the film (which is, in turn, based on Otomo’s 2,182-page graphic novel). The Hughes’ last movie, the post-apocalyptic action flick The Book of Eli, was shot right here in New Mexico—thought it’s doubtful the futuristic Tokyo-set Akira would lure them back here. On the up side, this isn’t the Hughes’ first attempt at tackling a comic book property. Their 2001 thriller From Hell was based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell.
