On March 20, 2003, hundreds gathered near UNM to protest the Iraq War. The Albuquerque Police Department showed up in riot gear, launched tear gas, shot pepper-ball guns and beanbag rifles. Seven years later, eleven marchers took APD and the city to court saying their civil and constitutional rights were violated. (Read the Alibi’s courtroom coverage here and here.)At 1 p.m. today, the jury returned a verdict: The defendants did not violate the protesters’ First Amendment right to freedom of expression and assembly, and they did not commit battery against the demonstrators.
