New Mexico was second in the nation for rates of forcible rape, according to the 2007 Crime in the United States report. Nearly half of all sex crimes in the state reported to law enforcement come from Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance and Valencia counties. These statistics come to us from K.C. Quirk, executive director of the Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico. She’s bringing attention to Sexual Assault Awareness Month. April was given this designation by President Obama, who signed a national proclamation. Gov. Bill Richardson followed suit, and issued one for the state. RCCCNM has been around for 37 years, and on Sunday, April 18, it will celebrate the opening of a new center at 9741 Candelaria NE. From 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. there will be poetry, face painting, a magician, a cake walk and food from Scarpas. This family friendly block party is also an open house and fundraiser.
