The era of drive-in movie theaters and sock hops is long gone, but Motown-inspired girl groups are still bopping. Modern indie music crooners such as The Pipettes, Lucky Soul, The Like and The School have all released new albums this spring and summer. These bands, made up of girls in bright dresses (or, in the case of two of the bands, girls in bright dresses and men in suit jackets) deliver bright, uncomplicated pop music reminiscent of The Supremes or Martha and the Vandellas. The Like have researched their predecessors extensively, citing 1960s groups such as The Dixie Cups as influences, but also counting groups who only recorded one single, such as The Honeys and The Cookies, among their muses. This light, whimsical music is perfect for summer, and its energetic beats will help get you going on these hot, lazy days.
