Downtown pedestrians are looking skyward this afternoon toward the abandoned Anasazi building on Sixth Street and Central. A dozen or more police cars have established a perimeter and helicopters are flying overhead. Construction stopped on the 10-story, 90,000-square-foot shell of a building in October 2008. Today, at 3 p.m. APD got a call about several people inside the Anasazi. The caller said they were removing copper, according to public safety spokesperson T.J. Wilham. One person has been arrested, and police dogs are sniffing out the others. This isn’t the first time thieves have broken into the building to scout copper, according to Albuquerque police.In June 2010, the city boarded up the building because it was so easy to get into.
