Double Gourd Dance!
Share ::
The United Native Council of New Mexico hosts an all-day celebration of native culture, featuring singing, dancing and eating in Old Town Plaza. Festivities begin at noon on Saturday with a Gourd dance—Southern Drum—followed by a Gourd dance—Northern Drum. The ceremonial rug cutting, consisting of four sets of four songs, probably originated with the Kiowa people, but it’s spread throughout many tribes. At 2 p.m. the Jemez Pueblo Singers and Drummers help you work up an appetite; grab some dinner at one of the Old Town eateries. Finally, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., there’s a full-on intertribal powwow.
