The festival is called ¡Globalquerque!, but it has a little addendum to its name that’s worth noting: “New Mexico’s Annual Celebration of World Music and Culture.” Yes, there are great musicians from such exotic locales as Finland, Burkina Faso and the South Valley playing their hearts out for two nights, but there are also a number of other attractions that are well worth your attention.Events take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center unless otherwise noted. Free Concert The last in a series of weekday outreach events features Sukhawat Ali Khan and Geoffrey Gordon, members of Baraka Moon, in an intimate, instructive and free concert featuring the music of India and Pakistan. Welcome the World A reception gives you a chance to welcome several festival artists and enjoy free appetizers, a cash bar and some spontaneous musical fun. Free Global Fiesta Free fun and instructional activities suitable for all ages will fill the entire National Hispanic Cultural Center campus on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Created in collaboration with the NHCC’s Education Department, this collection of workshops, demonstrations, lectures and readings focuses on arts and crafts, languages, foods, music, dance, and more. Get your hands dirty or your feet moving, expand your mindfulness or just stare in wonder. The NHCC Art Museum will be open and free, as well. Global Village of Craft, Culture and Cuisine The Global Village presents an enticing selection of fine international foods and goods that will whet, respectively, your appetite and your urge to shop. Food vendors offer black beans, artisanal pizzas, beer and chocolate. Craftspeople and importers feature primarily handmade items including glassware, drums, beads and soaps. Plus, you can raise your awareness about health, business, women-focused microfinancing and more at a handful of cultural booths.
