Isabel Allende’s La Casa de los Espíritus (The House of the Spirits) is a staple in Latin American magical realism. Through main character Alba, the sweeping novel tells the story of four generations of a Chilean family as they struggle through the nation’s tumultuous political climate. The book has received countless film and stage adaptations since its publication in 1982, including the production now in its final week at The Vortex Theatre (2004 1/2 Central SE). Using Caridad Svich’s stage version of the novel, director Valli Marie Rivera has incorporated song, dance and puppetry to bring the story’s magical elements to life. Rivera also directed local author Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima at The Vortex in early 2010. This weekend’s shows are on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
