I really believe that without competent, creative and sometimes crazy sound engineers and producers, music would be a mess. Organizers, overlords and auteurs in their own right, these folks are both in the background and on the front lines of Burque’s music scene. Our readers said the number one bastion of order and true tonality in these parts is Matthew Tobias, owner of Empty House Studio. A drummer with an expansive post-percussion vision, Tobias began his recording career in Nebraska, relocated to Burque four years ago and proceeded to make kick ass recordings by edgy acts like Bathhouse, Shoggoth, Russian Girlfriends and Cactus Tractor.

Best Of Burque Music 2017 Best Radio Station For Local Music

In reality, KUNM is the most reliable way to listen in on the always-developing and evolving local music scene. It’s been that way for at least 50 years; both friends and critics of the university point to the programming at KUNM with pride. And with a grip of shows and local expert DJs—like Mark Weber, David Dunaway, Megan Kamerick and “The Doctor”—committed to exploring, exhibiting and elucidating all levels of sound expression from local to universal, KUNM is the perfect place to tune into the sound that the local music community makes as it grimaces, growls and grows; the station really does play music to soothe the savage beast.

Best Of Burque Music 2017 Best Label

Another glorious tie, y’all! Sicksicksick Distro, the brainchild of notorious postmodern wunderkind Raven Chacon had just as many votes as Orange Whip Records, the organizing factor responsible for the dissemination of the recorded works of punk rock revivalists Rock Jong Il. Chacon’s label, repped by a tellingly minimalist catalog page, features recordings by Leeches of Lore, Lionhead Bunny, Bigawatt, Tahnzz and ICUMDRUMS; much of Burque’s musical avant-garde is on order here. Orange Whip, meanwhile focuses on the work of one of Burque’s most pure and provocative punk rock purveyors. Their latest work, Dictators of Rock is the label’s main feature and a review clarifies the work’s place in history. The Pere Ubu comparison gives the label good, old-fashioned rock cred.

Best Of Burque Music 2017 Best Music Teacher

The Best Horn Player in this town, according to active and voting Alibi readers, is also the Best Music Teacher too. Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra member and saxy man about town, Taylor has a teaching studio at Baum’s Music, where he spread’s his already diffuse influence and prepares the next generation for a life in music.
