Over the years, cannabis has elicited a range of responses from humanity. Founding Father and poetic stoner President Thomas Jefferson is quoted as having said, “Some of my finest hours have been spent on my back veranda, smoking hemp and observing as far as my eye can see.” On the other side of the battlefield, you have four-star generals of the War on Drugs like Harry J. Anslinger, who claimed that, “Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.” And then you have people like conservative commentator and author William F. Buckley Jr: “The anti-marijuana campaign is a cancerous tissue of lies, undermining law enforcement, aggravating the drug problem, depriving the sick of needed help and suckering well-intentioned conservatives and countless frightened parents.” No matter where your sincerely held beliefs lie on the spectrum, the future is staring us all in the face: legalization. Despite federal laws that still ban the substance as a schedule I drug—“with no currently accepted medical use”—cannabis has been legalized in some form in 29 states. It’s happening. So to roll out the red carpet to the bright future of better health, compassionate care for those in mental and physical pain, and logical, science-based legislation, Weekly Alibi presents the first annual New Mexico Cannabis Manual. Read on and be well.
