Study Says Cannabis Use Not Caused by Legalization

A study released by the journal of
Addiction last week concluded that the growing rate of cannabis use is not the result of legalization. Researchers at the Public Health Institute’s Alcohol Research Group analyzed data from National Alcohol Surveys and compared them to the legalization time line. They found that rather than law enforcement policy changes, the leading cause for the spike in cannabis use is caused by what they call “period effects”—or societal changes that affect all cultural or generational groups.

Damage Caused by Teenage Use of Cannabis Reversible

Although there has never been any definitive proof of the claim, some studies have linked teenage use of cannabis with adult onset of schizophrenia or schizophrenia-like symptoms. But a
recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry seems to have found the mechanism by which such effects could occur. The study found that rats who were exposed to THC at a young age experienced a reduction in the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. As a result, the researchers discovered that they could reverse the schizophrenia-like effects in the rats’ brains by using drugs that activate GABA, meaning the THC’s negative health effects were not permanent.
