If you don’t feel like making your own prickly pear jelly (which is fair, considering the risks that come along with doing anything with a cactus), you can buy some of this tasty desert-dweller’s treat at Spur Line Supply Co. N.M. Prickly Pear Jelly is a small operation run out of the South Valley Economic Development Center’s kitchen incubator, and, as their name suggests, they only make one thing. The jelly is sweet and bright purple, and goes great on just about anything that grape jelly does. Makes a great gift for all the adventurous eaters in your life.
The chocolate lovers on your gift list will thank you for this one. Albuquerque’s own Theobroma Chocolatier makes amazing chocolate treats, but their truffles are especially indulgent. The artisan truffles come in milk and dark chocolate varieties, and there are many different flavors to choose from, with amaretto, champagne and lemon being just a few. You can buy a box of 4, 9, 15 or 24. You can order online and have them delivered to your door, or stop by their storefront in Glenwood Village. Visiting the store definitely has certain olfactory perks, though.
Do you have a culinarily hopeless friend or family member on your gift list? Start their new year off right with a cooking class at Jan’s on 4th, where they’ll gain a few skills to make them more competent in the kitchen. You can sign them up for the six-week culinary crash course, where they’ll learn everything from how to hold a knife to how to make a crepe. Or, you could simply get a gift certificate and let them decide which class they’d like to take—anything from classic New Mexican cuisine to tapas to vegan cooking to “30 minutes or less” meals.
