Let me begin by stating that the prior Lobos preview may have been a tad bit optimistic considering the final results. So while we get the sour taste from the homecoming game out of our mouths, we should focus on the always-needed room for improvement. Although injuries didn’t help the University of New Mexico’s football team this weekend, its defense furthered its already questionable reputation to boot.

UNM (2-2) took the first lead of the game before trailing until the end and the Lobos nearly made a comeback in the second half after trailing 42-10 at halftime. Among the blunders, a potentially season-ending injury was sustained when quarterback Tevaka Tuioti suffered a broken clavicle in his non-throwing shoulder at the end of a long run. This only adds to the previous loss of senior linebacker Alex Hart, which has left a noticeable gap in the defense.

With four games played this season, fans are left speculating what steps will be taken to correct the team’s considerable defensive issues as it heads into conference play. UNM nearly pulled off a historical comeback; one that would have shattered previous school records. However, as much as the offense did right throughout the game, New Mexico’s woes on the other side of the ball became the imminent dagger. Per
golobos.com Head Coach Bob Davie also reflected on the defense following the loss:

“Well, we have to get better. We thought we were going to be pretty good on defense. We have no excuses. It starts with me and we have to back out there at 4 o’clock tomorrow. We can’t tuck our tails. We can’t drop our heads. We’ve got to stay together and we’ve got to get things solved."

So with an even season so far, UNM will seek much-needed improvements with this weekend’s road-game against rival UNLV (2-2).
