Welcome to the Weekly Alibi ‘s 2006 Spring Crawl! We’ve spent the last seven years massaging this musical behemoth into the fine beast you see today: 100-or-so local and national acts, all crammed into one night and scattered throughout the Downtown area. We call it "crawling," and it’s never been easier. Buy one flat-rate wristband ($10 in advance, $15 day of show) and you’ll gain access to six hours of incredibly diverse live performances this Saturday, April 29. Happy crawling!

What’s New This Year?

We’re excited to announce that KUNM 89.9 FM’s "Southwest Stages" will broadcast a special live radio feed from our outdoor stage on Fifth Street and Central. Tune into Spring Crawl over the commercial-free airwaves between 7 p.m. and midnight. Through the magic of radio, you’ll get goodies you won’t find anywhere else, like interviews, special guests, schedule updates and more.

The Alibi is also thrilled that a record three all-ages venues are on the roster this time around. Among them, the Sunshine Theater (Central between First and Second Street) will feature a mix of rock, metal, punk and ska, as well as national headliners Guttermouth. If you’re over 21, smoking and alcohol service will be available in segregated areas. Gold Street Caffé (Gold between Second and Third Street) will once again be a lively and laid-back all-ages destination, with local acts that run the gamut from blues to indie rock, beat-boxing to singer-songwriting. Beer, wine (for over-21-ers) and a full menu are available. And, for the first time in Crawl history, NYPD (northwest corner of Central and Second Street) will open itself up as an alcohol-free venue with DJed dub, drum and bass, and house music. As usual, you’ll be able to buy pizza, salads, soft drinks and water at the restaurant.

You’re in luck! Downtown is booming with the strongest, most diverse restaurant scene it’s had in decades. Everything from sushi to fine dining, vegetarian fare to burgers are all within easy reach of the Crawl venues. Thumb through the "Crawl Chow" capsules in this week’s food section. You’ll find a listing of every dining establishment in the heart of Downtown, plus many that are just a short walk or drive from all the action.

How It Works

Buy your tickets early. Wristbands are available in advance for $10 at all Ticketmaster outlets (plus a service fee, www.ticketmaster.com), Natural Sound in Nob Hill (plus a service fee, 255-8295), the Alibi offices (413 Central NW) and online (alibi.com). Note that you can avoid paying a service fee by purchasing wristbands directly through the Alibi offices and website. If you’re a masochist, day-of-show wristbands cost $15 and will be available at the Alibi Info Booth, Sunshine Theater, Fifth Street Outdoor Stage and El Rey Theater on the night of the Crawl. Once you’re squared away on admission, scan the schedule of bands to see who’s playing and where during each time slot.

Getting Home

Your best line of defense is always to drink responsibly. No matter what happens, do not drive drunk. Don’t allow anyone you know to drive drunk, either. Instead, check in to one of the many reasonably priced hotels that Downtown has to offer, call a cab or take the $5 JIT Shuttle (departs from Fourth Street and Central between the hours of 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.).
