Why is it that people give me information about events after I’ve already sent the final edit of the calendar to production? It’s the plight of any calendars editor. So, on top of our weekly picks for super cool events, here’s some of the late bloomers—"hot of the presses" events, if you will. Get Celtic— Nope, St. Patty’s Day is not really celebrated much in Ireland. My most recent Irish pub experience actually involved an Irishmen, who informed me that St. Patty’s Day is just and excuse for Americans to drink and pretend they are Irish. Maybe thats true, but the 18 th Annual Rio Grande Celtic Festival isn’t such an excuse—it is for those of Celtic heritage to celebrate and enjoy their culture along side those who are equally appreciative. Activities include the Highland dance competition, performances by Scottish and Irish dance groups, a pipe band competition and haggis tossing. No joke. The kids can come chuck some sheep guts. Other things to be tossed are the hammer, stones, sheaf and caber. The festival takes over the Balloon Fiesta Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 20. The Symphony at the Zoo— How did I miss this two weeks in a row? The shame, the shame. The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony Under the Stars has two more evenings to play at the Rio Grande Zoo. Tonight, NMSO will be joined by Mike Roberts of NewsRadio 770 KKOB, the Voice of the Lobos and former Albuquerque Dukes announcer, to narrate "Casey at the Bat." Other music included in tonight’s program is music from Rocky , the Olympic Fanfare and Chariots of Fire . On Saturday, recognize our troops with "A Patriotic Symphony Salute" including Richard Rodgers’ Victory at Sea , "America" and "Salute to the Armed Forces." Both shows start at 8 p.m. Lawn seats are $13 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 17. Summer Reading List— Schools almost out, and I’m sure the last thing your kid is looking forward to this summer is an extensive reading list. The Albuquerque and Bernalillo Country Library System has a plan to help make reading fun for the kids with a summer reading incentive program. To kick it off, they’re hosting a shindig at the South Broadway Library and Park (1025 Broadway SE) from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 20. There’ll be spin art, live music, clowns and other entertainment, and a gateway to the future of knowledge!Oi! There is so much to do. What interesting things are you doing this weekend?
