The Song That Never Ends

I’ll just come right out and say it: I’ve had "Kiss From a Rose" by Seal stuck in my head for going on two months.

I’ll leave you with that thought for a moment.

Yeah, it’s that bad.

How is it possible to have any song, never mind
that song meandering inside my head for so long? Buddy, I haven’t the slightest. I don’t remember how it started–if I was in a store and the song was playing on the speakers, if it was a restaurant, a TV show, a movie, someone else humming it. I was just sitting in my office one day, editing something, I’m sure, and out it came. My office mate, Calendars Editor Amy Dalness, turned around and gave me a weird look. I shrugged.

You see, I have what is probably a rather annoying habit of humming/singing the most utterly random songs at the most utterly random moments. Yesterday, I walked in singing "Bonnie Banks O’ Loch Lomond" (aka "You Take the High Road"). Sometimes it’s the
Harry Potter theme song. Other times it’s just Bob Dylan. Poor, poor Amy.

Thankfully, as is insinuated by the fact that I’ve still managed to bother people by blurting out other songs, the "Kiss From a Rose" phenomenon isn’t constant. It ebbs and flows. But I don’t think I’ve gone one godforsaken day without humming it in several fortnights. That’s got to be some kind of world record.
