So, for the first time ever, I’m watching the kind of awful America’s Got Talent, and who should take the stage alongside Regis Philbin but Albuquerque’s own Zach Freeman.

Zach does this super-amazing layered beat-box a cappella thing. With a sampler around his neck and a mic, he loops bits of beat under thick harmonies, all made up on the spot. He’s so good. You might have seen him at the State Fair or at one of the Crawls or out doing stuff for our public access channel.

So Zach gets up there and improvises in his brilliant way about the show. There are shots of audience members, mouths agape. I’m feeling something that resembles civic pride. (
Regis: Where are you from? Zach: Albuquerque).

Then he’s beaten out by some idiot who plays mandolin with an egg-beater. I was furious.

I don’t know much about the show, but if I understood the briefly uttered instructions correctly, the contestants have another chance to win at the end of the season? If that’s the case, cross your fingers for Mr. Freeman.
