Glasgow-born Ian Campbell paints music. His large-scale canvases are a scattered melody of vibrant rectangles, assembled with the frenetic fervor of free-form jazz. Maybe that’s because Campbell uses ’70s jazz—and also classical music—as the soundtrack and inspiration for his pieces while he paints. Citing Kandinsky as a major influence, Campbell’s work is even more reminiscent of the impasto pieces of early 20 th century abstractionist Nicolas de Staël. His show Emergence opens with a reception Friday, Oct. 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Palette Contemporary Art and Craft (7400 Montgomery NE).
